TARQUINIA / SANTA SEVERA
After ten routes inland, between hills and mountains, the GTL15 returns to the sea, this time north of Rome: it is a simple and quiet stage, about fifty km almost all on the plain, sheltered by the coastal chain of the Tolfa Mountains. This stage follows the course of the future Tyrrhenian Cycle Route, of which there are only a few small sections, following the course of the busy Via Aurelia in parallel and taking advantage of its coplanar and secondary roads. From Tarquinia we lose the remaining altitude by gaining the coast, and from there we head south: on our route, pleasant seaside resorts such as Tarquinia Lido and Santa Marinella, as well as important ports such as Civitavecchia. The track winds around the new Aurelia trying to avoid it in every way, now on the seafront of the villages crossed, often already equipped with safe cycle paths, now on the roads of the hinterland. Our destination, Santa Severa, is embellished by the scenic Castle, which stands right on the sea, on what was the ancient site of Pyrgi, an Etruscan settlement.

Castelletto d'Erro
Population 155, it's one of the peaks of this mountain area coloured by lavender fields. What to see: the medieval fortress now is just a square tower. The Assunta church contains a painting ascribed to Pietro Ivaldi called "il Muto" (the Mute"). Visit Sant'Onorato, a small chapel 1 km far from the village.
Montechiaro d'Acqui
The village is 15 km from Acqui Terme. The highest part is on the crest between Bormida and Erro Valleys: the landscape is astonishing. Its main features are the cobblestones streets, the vaults, the staircases made of sandstone. All of the houses are made of stones with plaques, gates and emblems with signs of the past centuries. You can visit the parish curch of Saint George (16th Century) and the Saint Catherine oratory, the latter is now the Peasants' Museum.
Ponti
During the Roman Age via Aemilia Scauri passed here. An original mileston was found here and is now protected under the City Hall arcades. An articulated tour that showcases all of the repertoire, of the typologies of cycling paths of the Bay of the Sun. From Aurelia they earn a hundred metres of quota going back to the church of Holy Cross ; they follow four km of the way Iulia Augusta goes. At the crossroads from the leading abbey, Saint Martin is beginning to follow, in strong ascent, the guinea pig "two red boils". A dirt goes up with some delightfully panoramic returns on the plains of Albenga. A few tens of meters along the ridge, and on the left appear the "S-toppled S" scorer that reports on the south side. It begins the "trail of the wave", perhaps the most iconic trace of the area : an incredible panoramic sea view, excavated on the steps of the quarzite of the falsehoods that loom above the port of Alassio. Technical difficulties and a few trialistic passages are compensated by the feeling of floating free between heaven and sea. It relaxes us a little bit, circumventing the Bignone and Pisciavino mountains, and preparing for "The Jungle." Exposed to the north, on the opposite side of the watershed, the ring swirl for softer and booby-sided slopes : a surprising change of scenery. To go back to the valley you can use one of the ridge's multiters. It is located the communal street for the Palazzotto, passes this large abandoned building and, a few metres later, in front of a villa with a curious garitta, begins the descent on selels, with the marked "two red losanges". The first trait does not incite fear, then takes a breath for a few metres on the "red boil" path and the mulattage begins to plunge with a slope no bad. At the end-ruzzled we find ourselves again in the city.

After kilometers and kilometers of coastline, the fifth stage of the GTL heads inland, to retrace the Tyrrhenian stretch of the Gustav Line, the retreat front of the German army at the end of the Second World War. The strategy imposed by Hitler was to leave death and destruction behind, and the villages in this area still bear the signs of what was the scene of bloody war actions between the Nazis and the Allies. We start from the archaeological excavations of what was once a flourishing Roman city of Minturnae, whose aqueduct is still clearly visible from the Appian Way, and we flank the Garigliano river, which at this point is crossed by a beautiful Bourbon bridge, to go up its course along the Way of San Filippo Neri. The road is slightly uphill and the first few kilometers are immersed in the bush, broken only by spas and dams on the river. The track dances on the border between Lazio and Campania, skirting villages such as Castelforte, Santi Cosma e Damiano, Sant'Ambrogio sul Garigliano. The kilometers before Cassino reveal the first signs of the Ciociaria countryside, with the pre-Apennines in front of us and the imposing figure of the Abbey of Montecassino, a Benedictine monastic complex famous for one of the most violent bombings of the last war, where there are still numerous monumental war cemeteries.
