Starting in Radda in Chianti, where cyclists can admire the old city walls, and ending in Greve in Chianti, the birthplace of explorer and navigator Giovanni da Verrazzano, the route breezes by vineyards in the sunny Golden Basin of Panzano in Chianti, cuts through San Casciano and then dips down towards Castellina in Chianti, chosen by Michelangelo Buonarroti as his personal retreat. The long route meanders through the southernmost part of the territory, among lush vineyards and breathtaking hills, like the ones of San Regolo and Castagnoli. Both routes descend and rise several times, but don’t include highly technical incline climbs, allowing participants to enjoy the amazing landscape in its most glorious moment – the end of summer.

This route crosses one of the most beautiful and characteristic areas of Monferrato!
Our pedal assisted bicycles will take you to the wonderful heart of this land, full of surprises and breathtaking landscapes.
From the Big Bench of “Bricco Lu”, you can enjoy a 360 degree view (or almost) of the whole surrounding landscape. In the distance, the Alps, with their perennial glaciers, will be the masters. All around you, you will see the immensity of the vineyards and hazelnut groves that represent the real flagship of Monferrato Area.
How to visit Montegrosso d’Asti
Montegrosso preserves an ancient medieval village located on the top of the hill. Right in the ancient center, the feudal castle stands out imposingly, built in 1134, a true work of engineering for the time.
Our journey starts from the “Enoteca dei Colli Astiani”, a reference point in the area for over 20 years for all lovers of good wine.
The route will wind between the hills of Monferrato and Langhe through splendid scenery.
You pedal almost immediately on a slope to reach the "crest" of the surrounding hills and enjoy the best landscapes.
Once you reach the border with Castagnole delle Lanze you will reach the Big Bench of Bricco Lu, from which you will have a memorable view of the surrounding landscape.
Calosso
Continuing the ride "on the crest" you will arrive at the ancient village of Calosso, also perched on a hill dominating the surrounding landscape.
This town is made famous by the Rapulè Festival which takes place every year on the third weekend of October, when the harvest comes to an end.
During this event it is possible to wander through the streets of the historic center tasting the typical dishes of Piedmontese cuisine, combined with sensational wine tastings.
In Calosso, the fortified wall that houses the ancient medieval castle certainly stands out.
This imposing structure has had a rather troubled history over the centuries and has undergone numerous destructions and alterations.
Agliano Terme and Retourn
Continuing along the route you will reach the town of Agliano Terme, a town famous for its wine landscapes and, as the name itself says, for its small spa.
You will reach the highest point of the town, characterized by a large square with an excellent view and the majestic tower of the ancient castle.
The castle of Agliano Terme was destroyed in the first half of the seventeenth century during the struggle between the Duke of Savoy and the Spaniards for the succession of Monferrato.
Today the tower remains of the mighty castle, which can be visited and owned by the aqueduct.
The top of the building is a privileged vantage point for observing the hills of the Province of Asti.
Going down towards the valley you will pass in front of the thermal station.
In 1770 a spring with a particular smell was discovered in a field of Agliano.
Subsequent chemical-physical analyzes confirmed the presence of sulfur and other substances in what the locals called "rotten water".
Right in that place, a hotel was built that began to welcome tourists right away and, later, everything became a spa.
Continuing along this flat road, the route will bring you back to the “Enoteca dei Colli Astiani” from where the tour started.
in Monferrato, in Campo ligure, to Lerma Castle, to Lavagnina's lakes, in Capanne's natural parc
A track designed to touch one of the most famous points of Monferrato: the “Torre dei Contini”, a panoramic point of extreme charm.
Treat yourself to a visit to this beautiful site and climb to the top of the tower to enjoy a 360 degree view of the surrounding landscapes.
How to visit Nizza Monferrato:
Nizza is the most important agricultural and commercial center located in the heart of Monferrato area, one of the most famous Italian places of wine production in the world, especially as regards red wines. UNESCO World Heritage Site for its landscape assets and for the Barbera and Nizza DOCG wines, it is the most important center of the province and of the Belbo Valley.
In Nizza it is worth taking a stroll through the streets of the center and stopping to admire the Campanon tower, in the town square, the oldest civic tower in the city, incorporated into the Town Hall.
The historic center is beautiful, full of typical bars and restaurants where you can taste the specialties of Nicese and Piedmontese cuisine based on Cardo Gobbo, a renowned local product.
There will certainly be the possibility of some amazing tasting of red wine at the Regional Winery of Nizza, located near the splendid Palazzo Crova, an admirable example of an 18th century noble town residence.
At the end of the tour, the more "daring" will be able to reach the Church of Madonna della Neve, one of the highest points in the town.
It can be reached via a very steep climb but the view over the city and the surrounding municipalities is certainly worth the effort.
The track starts from the e-bike collection point in Nizza Monferrato and winds through a maze of secondary streets until it reaches the splendid hamlet of Sant’Antonio di Canelli.
Canelli and Torre dei Contini:
The track will continue after turning near the Church of Sant’Antonio Abate and will make you proceed in the direction of the tower, along a secondary road. During the ride you will always see, in one of the highest points around you, the top of the tower, which will be your reference throughout this part of the route.
Near a purple building you can take the dirt road which, on foot, will take you to this particular monument.
The Tower, dating back to 1617, delimited the boundaries of the municipality and served as a military lookout.
From here, it is possible to have a 360-degree view of the surrounding landscape, glimpsing the perfect meeting between the hills of Monferrato and those of the Langhe
Continuing the planned route you will arrive in the center of Canelli.
The town of Canelli is a small town of about ten thousand inhabitants that rises near the southernmost border of the Monferrato, a few steps from the province of Cuneo.
Canelli is historically divided into two parts: “Il Borgo” and “Villanuova”. The first, further down the valley, is the one that has continued to expand with the passing of time while the second, the oldest Canelli, lies on the slopes of the hill and is still dominated by its castle, today Castello Gancia. The Borgo and Villanuova are connected by one of the historical elements of Canelli: La Sternia.
In the lower part of the city, down in the Borgo, from Piazza Amedeo D’Aosta you can take Via Giovanni Battista Giuliani. Continuing on this road and then turning onto Via Gioacchino Rossini, you will find yourself in Piazza San Tommaso. Here you will meet the Church of San Tommaso on the left, from which the square takes its name, and further to the right the Church of the Annunziata. Between the two religious buildings begins the Sternia, a paved pedestrian street whose current name is via Villanuova.
The Sternia climbs up the hill, crosses the medieval part of the town, reaches Piazza San Leonardo, home to the church of the same name and that of San Rocco (recognizable because it is completely brick). From here the road continues uphill until it reaches the top, at the foot of what is now Castello Gancia.
The Castle of Canelli was the protagonist of a rather troubled history. Presumably born at the beginning of the eleventh century, the Canelli Castle originally had the purpose of defending the roads that led from Asti to Savona, essential for merchant traffic.
Subsequently the fortress has witnessed many struggles and battles that have caused repeated destruction and reconstruction, until 1929 when the Castle was purchased by the Gancia family and transformed into a large noble residence. Even today, the castle dominates the town from above and shows the Canellese and visitors its beautiful appearance of an eighteenth-century villa.
Unfortunately, as the private home of the Gancia family, the castle cannot be visited, however, at least one passage is required to admire it from the outside.
Asti Spumante is the symbol of Canelli and with it are also the places where the wine takes shape. The Underground Cathedrals are located in the Borgo and represent, in a certain sense, the buried counterpart of the town. These were recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 2014.
We are talking about ancient and incredibly large cellars, where the fine wines of the area are brought to rest and where they develop their peculiarities. The Underground Cathedrals of Canelli belong to four great historic wineries: Bosca, Contratto, Gancia and Coppo. Although in different ways, all 4 companies make their treasures open to the public.
Always starting from Piazza Amedeo D’Aosta, take Via Giovanni Battista Giuliani: here you will meet the Contract and Bosca companies. Continuing in the direction of Corso Libertà you reach the door of the Gancia winery. The Coppo winery, on the other hand, can be found in another area of the Borgo, in via Alba.
After crossing the industrial area of the city, famous for its large companies of wine making machinery and bottling, secondary streets will take you back to the starting point of the tour in Nizza Monferrato.
in Monferrato, in Campo ligure, to Lerma Castle, to Lavagnina's lakes, in Capanne's natural parc
One-day 40 km tour in the Monferrato area around Acqui Terme. Visit Montechiaro d'Acqui and Castelletto d'Erro.
Castelletto d'Erro
Population 155, it's one of the peaks of this mountain area coloured by lavender fields. What to see: the medieval fortress now is just a square tower. The Assunta church contains a painting ascribed to Pietro Ivaldi called "il Muto" (the Mute"). Visit Sant'Onorato, a small chapel 1 km far from the village.
Montechiaro d'Acqui
The village is 15 km from Acqui Terme. The highest part is on the crest between Bormida and Erro Valleys: the landscape is astonishing. Its main features are the cobblestones streets, the vaults, the staircases made of sandstone. All of the houses are made of stones with plaques, gates and emblems with signs of the past centuries. You can visit the parish curch of Saint George (16th Century) and the Saint Catherine oratory, the latter is now the Peasants' Museum.
Ponti
During the Roman Age via Aemilia Scauri passed here. An original mileston was found here and is now protected under the City Hall arcades. Visit the ruins of the Marquis of Carretto castle and the parish church of the Assunta. Every year, on the last Sunday of April, there is the Sagra del Polentone, which is the Festival of the Big Polenta (local cornmeal mush).

Whilst enjoying a ride through natural scenic beauty, they can stop along the way for a visit to the Chianti Classico cellars - many of which will be open for guided tours and tastings - or take a longer break in one of the several restaurants near the route, delighting in dishes specifically created for the occasion and dedicated to cyclists.
In azienda agricola

This is a small village rich of history starting about 2500 years ago.
Earthquakes, wind and erosion have caused the valley to erode making the village more and more isolated.
The erosion is continuing in recent years and this will unfortunately lead to the slow disappearance of the village.

THE ITINERARY OF THE POPES AND THE OLD ROME FIUGGI RAILWAY
We are on one of the most demanding stages of the entire GTL, 80 km for about 1200 m of elevation gain. However, the route offers the possibility of being further fragmented, since several railway stations are located along the route and you can therefore use the bike transport service by train to shorten the journey. On the other hand, this stage offers a huge historical and cultural heritage, as well as sections of the existing cycle path, the route of the former Rome-Fiuggi railway.Starting from Frosinone, we continue to follow the route of the Eurovelo 5 Romea/Francigena, and we reach the village of Ferentino; from here begins the first of the climbs that characterize the course of the GTL7: the first objective is the village of Fumone, which overlooks the Ernici Mountains, on the top of which stands the imposing Castle owned by the Caetani family, the same as Boniface VIII: here Celestine V was imprisoned and spent his last days, the one who out of cowardice made the great refusal according to Dante; A gloomy and sinister place, it has originated various legends of ghosts over the centuries. From here we continue to the quiet Lake Canterno, until we go up towards Fiuggi, a well-known spa, where we can follow the route of the old railway that until a few decades ago led to Rome: today it is a marked cycle path that passes one after the other the stations of the past, sheltered from the traffic of the Via Prenestina. With a detour it is worth reaching Anagni, another delightful papal village rich in architecture and art.Acuto, Piglio, Serrano, and the route reserved for bicycles is interrupted: avoiding the Prenestina, we continue on Eurovelo 5 which leads us to other wonderful medieval towns such as Gimignano, Genazzano and Cave, ancient papal fiefdoms and a pilgrimage destination for writers such as Gregorovius, and above all Palestrina, whose Temple of Fortuna Primigenia stands out as one of the major pagan sanctuaries of Roman times. From this area there are also many beautiful roads towards the Prenestini Mountains, to deviate from the course of the GTL and challenge the climbs a bit.We hen end the route in Zagarolo, where there is another railway junction for Rome
a Empoli, in Val d'Arno
Irpinia is an area full of contradictions, but if you love quality wine and pedalling in total tranquillity on an ebike, perhaps a rented one, on traffic-free roads to discover small extraordinary villages with an agricultural vocation, you cannot help but love it.
We are in the province of Avellino, and it will take just a few pedal cycles to grasp the first contradiction. The metropolitan hustle and bustle of nearby Naples (the airport and station are less than 50 km from Avellino, very convenient and quick to reach) and Salerno is just around the corner, yet you are immediately struck by the peace and serenity that pervades these places.
The second great contradiction, on the other hand, you will begin to smell it - but it would be more correct to say 'taste it' - on arriving in Lapio, starting with tasting the Fiano di Avellino, one of the incredible wines produced in this territory which, more unique than rare, can boast no less than 3 Denominazioni di Origine Controllata Garantita (Denomination of Controlled and Guaranteed Origin).
Although the low mileage and the not-impossible altimetry could allow this Grand Tour to be completed in a single day (there are continuous ups and downs and a few challenging climbs), we recommend that you consider splitting the trip into two stages, so that you can enjoy the winery visits, a stop at an agritourism and a few chats with the inhabitants of the villages you pass through without the anxiety of time running out.
At the end of the tour - the third contradiction - it will be natural for you, as it is for those who live and for anyone who passes through these parts, to ask yourself: how is it that such an exceptional territory is still so little known in terms of tourism?
This route is a loop tour that starts and finishes at the e-bike rental point in Chiusano San Domenico.
However, if you prefer to start from the e-bike hire point located at the Avellino Cycle Station (Contrada San Lorenzo 18, Atripalda), add the AB/BA route (16.5 km) to this track to reach Chiusano San Domenico in comfort
The Grand Tour dei Vini Irpini is an itinerary that does not present any particular difficulties and can therefore be tackled with all types of e-bike available for hire: city, trekking and full suspension e-MTB.
This route lends itself well to being lengthened or shortened as required. So, feel free to contact us to let us know your time and/or fitness requirements: we will be happy to customise this track to perfectly suit your needs.
And now... let's go!
After refilling your water bottles with spring water from the Fontana Vecchia (a few hundred metres from the Chiusano San Domenico ebike rental point), ride back for a very short distance and, at the roundabout, follow the road to the right in the direction of Lapio. From now on, as far as Lapio, the road will always be downhill, but you will not get bored. Magnificent panoramas will keep you company and there will be no lack of views to photograph. On your right you will have the majesty of Monte Tuoro to keep you company, with the villages of Luogosano, Gesualdo and Fontanarosa in the distance. To your left, on the other hand, you can admire the Partenio Park, with Montevergine and other inhabited places. You will soon find yourself immersed in olive groves and long stretches of vineyards.
When you arrive in Lapio, take a tour of the village. In this area, thanks to the peculiarities of the soil and the specific environmental conditions, some of the best Fiano di Avellino wines of the entire province are produced. If you feel like tasting some of them, you will be spoilt for choice. Along your way you will encounter many wineries of this prized Fiano DOCG wine.
Follow the GPS track and continue your descent. The houses give way to vegetation and the road becomes winding in places, so be careful. After a couple of good kilometres, immediately after a bend, an imposing iron bridge towers above the road. Stop your ebike: you have arrived at Ponte Principe di Lapio. This bridge, built to allow trains to cross the River Calore, is a jewel of modern architecture. Learn more about its history in the fact sheet and don't forget to take a few photos before setting off again.
Once the wheels of your rented ebike have crossed the bridge under which the Calore River flows (not a bad view here, is it?), a wild ascent of about 2 km will begin. Some magnificent vineyards serve as a prelude to the entrance to the village of Taurasi, famous for the DOCG wine of the same name. An elegant wine that takes time to produce (minimum 2 years of barrel ageing, according to the production discipline) and time to appreciate and enjoy. Even in Taurasi, there is no shortage of wine cellars to visit and opportunities for tasting.
After having explored the production sites of Fiano di Avellino (Lapio) and Taurasi, all that remains is to reach Tufo, the production village of Greco di Tufo on your ebike.
From Taurasi to Calore (hamlet of Mirabella Eclano) the effort for you and your e-bike will be decidedly limited. The road continues almost always downhill and the pedal strokes required by your ebike will be few and far between. When you arrive in Calore, take a few minutes to walk around the small lake and to look at the bridge on which the road you have just travelled rests.
From here to the junction for Ventinticano, pay attention! You will be cycling for about 1.5 km on the Via Appia, an often busy road, also used by heavy vehicles. Although the road is uphill, in a few minutes, after turning right at the fork for Venticano, you will be back on a low-traffic road.
After passing the village of Venticano, you will be faced with the most challenging climb. 6 km of real climbing awaits you, with some stretches that exceed 10% gradient, so be sure to arrive here with your ebike's battery still charged. This road, after passing through the village of Pietradefusi, will lead you into the historic centre of Montefusco.
The town, located at the top of a hill, was an important political centre until 1816, when the role of provincial capital was taken from it by the city of Avellino. As well as enjoying breathtaking views, excellent Fiano di Avellino and splendid Greco di Tufo wines are produced here, thanks to its proximity to Tufo. The historic prison (for information on opening hours, ask at the Proloco) and the Monastery of Sant'Egidio (on the slopes of the town), where Padre Pio stayed during his novitiate, are of great importance.
Leaving the old town centre, you will come across a beautiful fountain where you can take a break after the strenuous climb and where you can refill your water bottles, before taking to the road again and leading your e-bike downhill towards Tufo.
When you arrive in Tufo you will have covered 40 km by now since you picked up your rented ebike in Chiusano San Domenico. When you stop at the beautiful fountain in the centre of the village square, you cannot help but agree with us: we are not exaggerating at all if we say that for at least 80% of the way here you have cycled through vineyards!
This is where the famous Greco di Tufo is produced, a DOCG white wine that has an ancient history and had the distinction of being the first wine that was able to bring Irpinian oenology into the national and international limelight. Many small and large farms produce wines of the highest quality. Ask for advice in the village or set out on your own to discover the cellars where you can taste some: you will be pleasantly surprised.
After Tufo, the loop begins to bend towards Chiusano San Domenico, where the Grand Tour of Irpinia wines by ebike will end. Not before, however, having passed through Pratola Serra and tackled the last long climb of the day. Conserve some battery power because you still have 10 km left almost entirely uphill! Just outside the town of Pratola Serra, TAKE GREAT CARE: THERE IS A VERY DANGEROUS CROSS-ROAD TO BE CROSSED!
You will pass through the small villages of San Michele di Pratola and San Fele, before arriving at the entrance to Montefalcione and, without crossing the village, finally joining the provincial road that will lead you to Chiusano. Since, in order to avoid busy roads, the itinerary includes passing on minor roads, keep an eye on your GPS track and navigator so as not to miss turning at the right crossroads.
We are waiting for you at the ebike rental point in Chiusano San Domenico, ready to welcome you back and to collect your impressions and suggestions on the experience you will have had riding your pedal-assisted bike.
Remember that we are at your complete disposal before, during and after your excursions on the rented ebikes. Thanks to the GPS trackers on all our pedal-assist bikes, we can reach you quickly and accurately in the event of difficulties.
For information on routes and rental, and for assistance during ebike rental, you can call us by phone (Mon 16:30-20:00 / Tue-Sat 9:30-13:30, 16:30-20:00) or text us on Whatsapp 24 hours a day.
