Il lago Aiso e la sue leggenda: what's to know

Discovering Lake Aiso, also known as Lake Abyss or Lake Hell, is an extraordinary experience. Sunlight filters through the algae on the surface, creating fascinating plays of light and vivid colours. The crystal-clear water reveals the surrounding vegetation, even from the bottom of the basin, thanks to its unique transparency. This phenomenon is due to its nature as an artesian resurgence, fed by underground springs, which gives the lake a constant current.

The lake is located north of Bevagna, nestled in the picturesque Valle Umbra, hidden among the trees. This natural environment seems to hold many secrets and mysteries. Its enigmatic aura attracts visitors eager to explore its depths and discover what lies beneath its tranquil surface.

Local legends tell tales of ancient rituals and mysterious presences that envelop the lake in a magical and intriguing atmosphere. Its wild beauty and mysterious charm make it a fascinating place for nature and adventure lovers, transporting visitors on an unforgettable journey through time and space.

The well-equipped green area around the pond offers a good spot to stop and rest a while near this charming and relaxing pond, which between 1990 and 2005 saw the discovery of numerous archaeological finds, with fragments of terracotta, marble statues and coins preserved in various places, such as Ponte S. Giovanni and the Museum of Perugia.

Waters, with their mysterious power, have always fascinated mankind, taking on curative and perhaps oracular values in a sanctuary context. The legend concerning Lake Aiso tells of a rich blasphemous peasant, Chiarò, whose house sank during the feast of Saint Anne, giving rise to Lake Aisillo, where it is said one can still see the submerged beams and hear Chiarò's voice every year on the feast day.
