Situated between Armenzano and Collepino, in the evocative Mount Subasio Park, lies a fascinating hidden village, often overlooked by many: San Giovanni di Collepino, known as ‘the paradise of pink stone’. The imposing walls that surrounded the centre of this ancient castle no longer exist, but legend has it that it was here that St Francis performed a miracle, restoring sight to Beatrice, the sister of the castle guardian, who later took up monastic life in the Monastery of Vallegloria.
San Giovanni is an oasis of tranquillity and serenity, ideal for escaping the hustle and bustle of the city. It does not offer traditional tourist attractions such as shops, bars or restaurants, but offers a genuine atmosphere and the chance to exchange a few words with the locals. Many people, including those from other countries, choose to spend time here to regenerate, aware of the lack of wi-fi connection, seeking precisely a break from technology and the daily hustle and bustle.
The stone houses, the pretty little church, the snoozing cats in the shade of the hedges, the flowers that adorn the windowsills and the chirping of the birds all contribute to making San Giovanni a true jewel to be preserved, so that it can continue to exist as an authentic and unspoilt place in time.
