The two routes, the Granfondo (135 km, elevation difference 2621 m) and the Mediofondo (83 km, elevation difference 1526 m), offer breathtaking views of our countryside, the ultimate iconic Italian landscape. Starting in Radda in Chianti, where cyclists can admire the old city walls, and ending in Greve in Chianti, the birthplace of explorer and navigator Giovanni da Verrazzano, the route breezes by vineyards in the sunny Golden Basin of Panzano in Chianti, cuts through San Casciano and then dips down towards Castellina in Chianti, chosen by Michelangelo Buonarroti as his personal retreat. The long route meanders through the southernmost part of the territory, among lush vineyards and breathtaking hills, like the ones of San Regolo and Castagnoli. Both routes descend and rise several times, but don’t include highly technical incline climbs, allowing participants to enjoy the amazing landscape in its most glorious moment – the end of summer.

After kilometers and kilometers of coastline, the fifth stage of the GTL heads inland, to retrace the Tyrrhenian stretch of the Gustav Line, the retreat front of the German army at the end of the Second World War. The strategy imposed by Hitler was to leave death and destruction behind, and the villages in this area still bear the signs of what was the scene of bloody war actions between the Nazis and the Allies. We start from the archaeological excavations of what was once a flourishing Roman city of Minturnae, whose aqueduct is still clearly visible from the Appian Way, and we flank the Garigliano river, which at this point is crossed by a beautiful Bourbon bridge, to go up its course along the Way of San Filippo Neri. The road is slightly uphill and the first few kilometers are immersed in the bush, broken only by spas and dams on the river. The track dances on the border between Lazio and Campania, skirting villages such as Castelforte, Santi Cosma e Damiano, Sant'Ambrogio sul Garigliano. The kilometers before Cassino reveal the first signs of the Ciociaria countryside, with the pre-Apennines in front of us and the imposing figure of the Abbey of Montecassino, a Benedictine monastic complex famous for one of the most violent bombings of the last war, where there are still numerous monumental war cemeteries.

It is an easy itinerary, suitable for both experienced cyclists and beginners, including children. It enables you to ride immersed in nature, passing through woods and clearings. A section of the cycle path is known as 'cycling through the woods.'
Following the river, the cycle path offers beautiful views of the watercourse: it's nice to cool off on very hot days.
The riverbanks are rich in typical vegetation of the area, and there are also sections where flowers typical of the Lake Maggiore region are cultivated.
Vogogna and Its Castle
Vogogna is one of the most beautiful villages in Italy with a medieval history waiting to be discovered. The town is still surrounded by ancient fortifications. The village was once located on the old Simplon road, which historically connected the Domodossola area with Brig in Switzerland. The symbol of the village and Val d'Ossola is the Visconti Castle. The castle is located to the north of the village and is built against a rocky spur. What can be seen today was part of a larger defensive system that also served as a lookout point over Val d'Ossola.
