Rientrando infine in città il corteo volgeva all’ultima tappa dell’itinerario: Santa Maria Maggiore.

formaggi, paste e ravioli fatti a mano, vini liguri e piemontesi, ottimi funghi e i rinomati tartufi

The Great E-Bike Ring: From Volterra to Montecatini Val di Cecina
The magnificent e-bike circuit connecting Volterra and Montecatini Val di Cecina represents one of Tuscany's most extraordinary cycling tourism opportunities, offering an immersive tourist journey through 3,000 years of history, breathtaking landscapes, and a rich cultural heritage. This great ring has been expertly designed to showcase the region's diverse attractions, making them accessible to everyone, even those who aren't physically trained, thanks to the revolutionary advantage of electric bicycles. The e-bike rental point in Volterra is a convenient starting point for exploring the area.
Volterra and Montecatini: Pedaling Among Historical Treasures
The bike tour is a loop connecting two extraordinary destinations that represent different facets of Tuscan heritage. On one side stands Volterra, a city whose three-thousand-year history is evident in its Etruscan walls, Roman theater, and medieval towers. Cycling in or out of Volterra offers cyclists spectacular approaches with panoramic views that have changed little since Etruscan times.
At the other end of the bike circuit lies Montecatini Val di Cecina, one of Tuscany's most picturesque medieval villages. Perched on a hill, it offers a fantastic panoramic view of the surrounding valley. The climb to reach the town is manageable even for those who are less trained, as the e-bike supports pedaling, allowing riders to tackle the ascent with little effort.
The e-bike route is designed to allow cyclists to start from the bike rental point in Volterra and visit both locations, completing the entire ring in one day with ample time for tourist visits to the villages, or breaking the journey with an overnight stay to experience both destinations in greater depth.
Between "Balze" and "Calanchi" by E-bike
The cycling tourism experience between these two ancient villages takes cyclists through an extraordinarily diverse landscape that showcases Tuscany's geological complexity. From the saddle of a bicycle, moving at the perfect pace to absorb the ever-changing landscape, one witnesses a remarkable transition from gently rolling hills to harsh and wild badlands (calanchi), to the distinctive formations of the "balze" (clay cliffs), then giving way to steep, rocky elevations reminiscent of mountain environments.
This geological diversity creates an ever-evolving cycling experience that makes the route never monotonous. Each curve reveals new panoramas, with the landscape transforming kilometer by kilometer. The e-bike assistance becomes particularly valuable during the transition from the gentler terrain around Volterra to the more challenging and mountainous approaches toward Montecatini, allowing cycle tourists to maintain a comfortable pace while enjoying the scenery.
Art and Nature: The Cycling Path through Land Art
One of the most distinctive aspects of this e-bike tour is the integration of cultural experiences directly into the route. After taking the panoramic dirt road marked as "Itinerary of the Balze and Calanchi," cyclists can access various branches of the path that lead to environmental sculptures created by the artist Mauro Staccioli. These remarkable examples of land art interpret the essence of what the artist called "places of experience."
Unlike tourists in cars who simply arrive at a designated parking area, cyclists gradually discover these works as they emerge from the landscape, creating a more organic and meaningful interaction with the art. Admiring the landscape, one can better appreciate how the artworks interact with and comment on the surrounding environment.
Visit to the Caporciano Copper Mine by E-bike
The e-bike circuit connects the natural landscape with the region's industrial heritage through the impressive Caporciano Copper Mine near Montecatini Val di Cecina. This historic site, which gave its name to one of the major industries of the 20th century (later Montedison), offers cycle tourists a fascinating look at the economic and social history of the early years of united Italy.
Located just over 1 kilometer from the center of the village, the Industrial Archaeology Park with the Alfredo Well, workshops, washeries, and the nineteenth-century mining village offers various visiting itineraries. Cycle tourists benefit from dedicated bicycle parking facilities that allow them to safely leave their e-bikes while exploring the mining complex on foot.
