La Maestà del Mascicone

Along the so-called ‘little road of Assisi’, you will notice the venerated ‘Statuetta di Assisi’, a shrine with a very old representation of the Madonna that is said to have miraculous powers. The legend of the Madonna of Mascione is well known in the Spello area, at the centre of worship and devotion, considered a source of grace and protection. Although her fame has diminished among younger generations, the Madonna remains a symbol of hope and faith for many. Popular devotees believe that their prayers are answered through the intercession of the Madonna, who is considered the patron and advocate of the community. The Maestà represents a spiritual reference point for the locals, whose cult is handed down from generation to generation.
The niche and even the sacred image are covered in graffiti, with names, dates and initials engraved. The fresco depicts the Madonna smiling lovingly as she holds the baby Jesus in her arms, emanating joy, serenity and motherly protection.
Curiosity: regarding this image, there is a local proverb that says ‘me pari la maestà de Mascione’, used to describe a woman who spends her time only caring for her son without doing anything else.
